King of Castile from 1474, Ferdinand II of
Aragon from 1479, and Ferdinand III of Naples
from 1504; first king of all Spain. In 1469
he married his cousin Isabella I, who
succeeded to the throne of Castile 1474;
together they were known as the Catholic
Monarchs because, as a reaction to 700 years
of rulle by the Moors, they Catholicized
Spain. When Ferdinand inherited the throne of
Aragon 1479, the two great Spanish kingdoms
were brought under a single government for
the first time. They introduced the
Inquisition 1480; expelled the Jews, forced
the final surrender of the Moors at Granada
1492, and financed Columbus' expedition to
the Americas, 1492. Ferdinand conquered
Naples 1500-03 and Navarre 1512, completing
the unification of Spain and making it one of
the chief powers in Europe.
